A View from the Rail is a collection of two features: Derby Dreams and Around the Track in 80 Days. Each feature approaches the game through a different lens. The first is a chronicle of horse racing through the eyes of a small-time, New York owner. The latter is a forum for horse racing fans.
Owners and fans. Two views. One passion.
The name A View from the Rail comes from the idea that at the track, both the owner and the fan exist in the world outside of the rail. Owners and fans, all of us, come to the track for the same reason- we love horses. We love the action inside the rail. But at the same time, how we love the sport, how we experience the track is unique to us all. This site is dedicated to exploring those differences.
Finally, A View from the Rail strives to have something for everyone. Horse racing is just one more metaphor for life; it is one more way through which a person might try to understand the world around them. And so in this way, the story of horse racing has something for us all.
